🌓 15+ Kid-Friendly Activities on North Captiva Island: A Family Vacation Guide

North Captiva Island isn’t just a tropical escape—it’s a wonderland for curious kids and adventurous families. Whether your crew loves digging for mole crabs, cruising in golf carts, or crafting coconut boats, this island offers endless ways to play, explore, and make memories. So, before the ā€œI’m boredā€ chorus begins, dive into this list of vibrant, family-tested activities that’ll keep your kids smiling from sunrise to sunset.

Every parent knows the biggest threat to a relaxing beach read is the dreaded ā€œI’m bored!ā€ Before the sibling squabbles start and your book hits the sand, arm yourself with a secret stash of fun. Let the kids roam wild with imagination—but keep these island-tested activities in your back pocket.

šŸ–ļø Beach Shenanigans at Silverseas Cottage

The beach is your playground!Ā  Every kid, from tiny to teen loves to dig a hole on the beach.Ā  My twelve-year-old enjoys seeing how deep he can dig, can he dig a tunnel under the cooler, under the canopy, big enough to bury his brother.Ā  So obviously it doesn’t take a lot of sophisticated tools to do this.Ā  Heck, you can even find a large shell to use as a scooper if your rental doesn’t have shovels!Ā  Challenge your kids to build a sandcastle.Ā  Don’t forget the shell decorations, the moat, the bridge, the lookout towers with shell toppers.Ā  Once that hole is dug and the sandcastle is built and torn down (probably by brother) challenge them to create a message with shells big enough to see from the small aircraft that often fly overhead!Ā  And, when they’re done, don’t forget to fill it that hole.Ā  The locals are sticklers about it!

šŸ” Scavenger Hunts & Sweet Rewards

Our home offers two island-themed scavenger hunts packed with quirky finds. Turn it into a competition and promise a trip to the Island Store for ice cream or fizzy soda as a prize. Motivation: unlocked.

šŸ¦€ Mole Crab Mania

Tiny, round, and buried in the wet sand—mole crabs are nature’s hide-and-seek champions. Look for bubbling holes near the retreating waves, scoop them up, and watch them vanish in a pail of seawater. Release them before heading home and let the birds feast!

šŸ›ŗ Golf Cart Cruising

Even if the kids can’t drive (Florida law says 16+), a slow cruise around the island is pure magic. Spot wildlife, admire quirky beach homes, and check off scavenger hunt items—all at a breezy pace that feels like vacation should.

🌊 Ocean Olympics

Even in the winter months of December and January the water is warm enough for the kids to play (although mom doesn’t get past her knees 😊).Ā  Silverseas stocks boogie boards, skimboards, snorkles and goggles, floaties and more for the kids to play with and they spend hours in the surf seeing who can go the furthest on the skimboard, competing for who wipes out the hardest on the boogie board, who can hold their handstand the longest, who can hold their breath, who can spot the coolest creature using their goggles.Ā  Make it a fun challenge and they’ll play for hours!

🐚 Shelling Showdown

Speaking of goggles, challenge them on who can find the most or the coolest shells during low tide.Ā  Or, who can find the most different shell varieties while walking on the beach.Ā  North Captiva is perfectly situated for some of the best shelling on the Gulf Coast so there’s no shortage anyway, but you might as well make it a challenge.Ā  Just off shore they can also often find the bigger lightening welks and horse conchs that might never make it to the beach.Ā  Just make sure they’re not alive before you haul them to shore!

šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø Redfish Pass Adventure

Take a beach hike to the southern tip of the island. It’s a trek, but the payoff is huge: stunning shells, curious critters, and surprise beach treasures. Pack a picnic, bring water, and make a day of it.

🚲 Nature Preserve Safari

Hop on a bike or take a walk through the preserve. Spot rabbits, gopher tortoises, and maybe even a coyote. Wander side paths and explore—just head west and you’ll always find your way back to the beach.

🄄 Coconut Craze

Sounds silly, but coconuts are hours of entertainment. My boys toss them into the surf and see how long before they wash back to shore, crack them open with sticks or shells, sip the water, and turn the husks into boats. It’s island engineering at its finest.

šŸŽ£ Fishing Fun

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a curious beginner, fishing from shore is easy and rewarding. Our home has gear, or you can rent from Boats and Fun. You might even catch dinner—just check the rules before you keep anything!

šŸŠā€ā™‚ļø Poolside Play

Silverseas Cottage has a private heated pool, but if you’re staying elsewhere, The Island Club’s public pool is open to all. Cannonball contests, splash wars, and floating races await.

🐢 Mackie’s Island Quest

This 2–2.5 hour kids’ program is a blend of learning and play. Led by retired educator Valerie Hortsman, it explores sea life, island critters, and shell wonders. Kids get a learning packet, make crafts, and enjoy snack time. It’s a hit every time.

šŸŽ² Rainy Day Rescue

Silverseas Cottage is stocked with board games, puzzles, Legos, and Thomas the Train. Whether it’s a rainy afternoon or a beach break, there’s something cozy and creative for every age. Plus, a library of books for quiet moments.

✨Stargazing in Paradise

There’s nothing quite like gazing at the Heavens from your remote island getaway.Ā  Head to the top deck and see how many constellations you can name.

🌊 Dolphin and Manatee Watching on North Captiva Island

Early mornings often bring calm seas and curious dolphins cruising close to Gulf shore, while sunset offers golden light that makes every splash sparkle. Manatee often can be found hanging around the docks of many of North Captiva’s marinas.

🐚Hunt for Hermits

You’re not going to want to take these shells home because they’ll smell like death (literally!) if you do, but it’s fun to see how many shells you can find that are inhabited by hermit crabs!Ā  The kids are going to beg to keep them, resist!!

šŸ›¶ Kayaking Adventures

Glide through the calm backwaters and mangrove tunnels for a peaceful escape into nature or ride the gentle waves of the gulf.Ā  Keep an eye out for birds, fish, and maybe even a dolphin swimming alongside your kayak—this is island exploring at its best!
